From London in the 1970s onwards, Marc Camille Chaimowicz developed a distinctive visual language in which installation became a space for experience, memory, and hospitality. Educated in England and enrolled in the painting course at the Slade School of Fine Art after 1968, he quickly directed his work beyond the conventional limits of the picture plane.
His practice brings together painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, film, textiles, ceramics, wallpaper, furniture, and light. Rather than separating fine art from the applied arts, Chaimowicz conceived interiors as shifting compositions in which objects, colour, decorative motifs, and literary references create spaces that are at once sensorial and narrative.
Bodies of work such as Celebration? Realife Revisited and his domestic environments articulate an aesthetic of intimacy, alert to the movement between private and public space and between French culture and a British context. The Dear Zoë collages, prompted by the figure of Emma Bovary, extend this reflection through fragments of imagery, desire, and reading.
Solo exhibitions at the Serpentine in London, the Jewish Museum in New York, Kunsthalle Bern, and WIELS in Brussels affirmed the international reach of an oeuvre in which conceptual precision meets decoration and lived experience.
