Heinrich Aerni, also known as Heinrich Aerne (Alt St. Johann, 24 February 1926 – Herisau, 3 June 2013), was a Swiss draughtsman and watercolourist associated with Art Brut and Outsider Art. SIK-ISEA records his dates precisely and identifies him as an artist, draughtsman and watercolourist in the field of Art Brut.
Without academic art training, Aerni spent much of his life in supported institutions in eastern Switzerland. In 1975 he moved to the Eben-Ezer home in Teufen. There, a carer encouraged him to draw during night duties.
From the late 1980s drawing became his principal creative activity. He also produced watercolours and frequently signed works «Heinrich» or «Heinrih».
His work developed outside academic conventions into a highly personal graphic language. Repetition, dense line work, simplified forms and a direct organisation of the picture surface place him firmly within Swiss Art Brut. The strength of the drawings lies precisely in this formal autonomy: rather than imitating academic models, they build a coherent visual universe out of sustained everyday practice.
Institutional recognition is strong within the specialist field. The open art museum in St Gallen, formerly Museum im Lagerhaus, holds an important group of works by Aerni through its 2014 acquisition of the Mina and Josef John Collection, one of the major bodies of Swiss Outsider Art. Aerni was included in the museum’s 2015 exhibition «Die Sammlung Mina und Josef John».
His work had already appeared in the 1997 Zurich group exhibition «Art Brut. Unbekannte Bekannte».
The 2015 catalogue «Die Sammlung Mina und Josef John im Museum im Lagerhaus» is a key reference for placing Aerni within Swiss Art Brut. No sufficiently reliable and coherent auction corpus has been identified; Swiss Art Gallery therefore gives greater weight to museum holdings, collection history and specialist documentation than to an artificially constructed market profile.
