The Italian painter and sculptor Esposito Arcangelo, known as Arcangelo, was born in Avellino in 1956. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1976 and graduated there in 1980. He lives and works between Milan and San Nazzaro, in the province of Benevento.
In the early 1980s, in Milan, he created his first cycle of works, Terra mia. A pared-down gestural mark transforms the landscape into an abstract, but also carnal, vision of nature. The motif of the Earth recurs in later cycles: it is conceived as a physical and spiritual place where the signs and symbols of an ancestral tradition converge. The Planets cycle introduces colour and circular and elliptical pictograms that evoke the celestial spheres.
The various iconographies are arranged in closed cycles that follow one another over more than three decades, in a movement described as stimulated by real journeys or imaginary pilgrimages. His painting practice brings together signs, stains, accumulations of pigment and marbling. He applies colour to the canvas by hand, with quick and precise gestures, or presses the pigment onto it with his fingers. His work as a painter and sculptor has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions and regularly in group exhibitions.
This profile brings together identity references for Arcangelo and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
