Edward Bird gives a prominent place to scenes of family life, a feature clearly documented in his choice of subjects. Before settling in Bristol in 1794 with the intention of establishing a drawing school there, he was an apprentice at an earthenware manufactory in Birmingham.
In 1813, he was appointed painter to Princess Charlotte.
In his study of the painting of everyday life and the renewal of genre painting, David H. Solkin presents Bird as one of the lesser-known followers of David Wilkie. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London is associated with Cottage Interior – Newport (Gal.), and the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery with Princess Caraboo (1817).
This profile brings together identity references for Edward Bird and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
