Frank Gerritz, born in 1964, approaches drawing through sculpture. His cast-iron blocks, measured in relation to his own body, inform an exploration of impressions and surfaces. Graphite on MDF and oil paintstick on aluminium transfer his investigation of volume to the plane of the wall and to the space surrounding it.
In Coded Language, Hardliner (2002), anodised aluminium supports a black composition whose presentation also engages the surrounding architecture. The Coded Language exhibition in The Hague in 2009 highlighted this relationship between material, space and perception. The National Gallery of Art holds Standfläche I–IV (1988), four prints in black ink on wove paper, given to the museum by Werner H. and Sarah-Ann Kramarsky in 2001.
This profile brings together identity references for Frank Gerritz and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
