Kenjiro Azuma (1926–2016), also known as Kengiro Azuma, was a Japanese sculptor based in Milan. Born into a family of bronze artisans, he trained in Japan and at the Brera Academy before becoming Marino Marini’s assistant. His career connected a traditional understanding of metalworking with an independent exploration of abstraction.
From 1960, his reliefs entitled MU pursued questions of fullness, emptiness and the transformations of matter. The YU series, begun in 1985, continued this investigation. The National Museum of Art in Osaka holds Mu (Nothing)–S501, a pair of bronzes made in 1966–1967 and acquired in 1981. These pieces place his spatial concerns within a sculptural practice surveyed in a retrospective at the Museo d’Arte in Mendrisio in 1994.
This profile brings together identity references for Kenjiro Azuma and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
