Jaber Al Mahjoub’s work brings together several media and materials: gouache, acrylic painting and sculptures made with plaster bandages, to which a sales notice adds papier-mâché. Described as highly colourful, his works take animals, street scenes and human figures among their subjects. The website devoted to the artist links the development of his practice to daily contact with the public and describes his knowledge as instinctive.
The biography reports that, orphaned of his father at the age of three and of his mother at six, he was raised by his sister Zina. Before devoting himself to art, he worked, among other things, as a baker and a boxer; the sources also describe him as an actor-singer and a showman. Presented as self-taught, he did not attend school and could neither read nor write, according to the biography. He settled in Paris in the 1980s.
His exhibition history includes a presentation at the Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris in 1988. In 2022, a tribute exhibition of his works was presented on the exterior walls of the Pavillon Carré de Baudouin, from January to May. Works by the artist are held in the collection of the Lille Métropole Musée d’Art moderne, d’Art contemporain et d’Art brut. Two books devoted to his work have been published: a monograph by Bertrand Bellon, Jacques-Yves Gucia and Françoise Monnin, published by Lelivredart in 2018, followed by Jaber : bonheur pour tous, by Laurent Lefebvre, Alin Avila and Patrice Bouvier, published by Area in 2019.
