Robert Mangold’s painting is distinguished by a minimalist language embodied in carefully defined formats and contours. His series of shaped canvases explore variations on motifs such as the ring, the column, the trapezoid, the arch and the cross. He studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1956, then continues his education at Yale University, where he earns a BFA and an MFA in 1963. Settling in New York in 1962, he works at the Museum of Modern Art, first as a guard and then as a library assistant.
In 1968, Mangold begins using acrylic rather than oil paint, applying the colour with a roller to masonite or plywood supports before moving to canvas later that year. From 1970, he works on canvases cut into specific shapes and applies the paint with a brush. His work also extends to stained glass, made for architectural projects.
His first solo exhibition is held at the Fischbach Gallery in New York in 1965. He participates in the Whitney Biennial in 1979, 1983, 1985 and 2004, as well as the Venice Biennale in 1993. Museum exhibitions of his work are presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1971, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego in 1974, the Stedelijk Museum in 1982 and the Musée d’Orsay in 2006. His works are included in the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, among others. Mangold receives a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1967, the Skowhegan Medal for Painting in 1993 and the Jawlensky Prize of the City of Wiesbaden in 1998; he is elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001 and to the National Academy in 2005.
