Charles Camoin, born in Marseille in 1879, briefly trained in Gustave Moreau's studio at the École des beaux-arts in Paris. There he met Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and Henri Manguin. After Moreau's death, he continued studying at the Académie Camillo. A meeting with Paul Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence in 1901 initiated a lasting correspondence. Returning to Paris after military service, Camoin exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'automne. His participation in the latter's celebrated room in 1905 linked him to the beginnings of Fauvism. These exchanges and shared exhibitions placed his career within the renewal of French painting. He settled in Saint-Tropez in 1921 while continuing to work in Paris, where he died in 1965.
