Erik Boulatov, also transliterated as Erik Bulatov, was born in Sverdlovsk in 1933 and trained in Moscow. Illustrating children’s books, notably with Oleg Vassiliev, allowed him to pursue his own painting alongside that work. During the 1960s he participated in the exchanges of the Sretensky Boulevard group without adopting a uniform collective aesthetic. His paintings confront a world rendered with almost photographic precision with words that seem to obstruct or cross its space. Landscapes and skies become sites of tension between visual depth and social language. Photography serves as a tool within this process of construction. Presented by Galerie Dina Vierny as early as 1973, he continued his practice in Paris after settling there in 1992.
This profile brings together identity references for Erik Bulatov and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
