Hans Dahl

Born : 1849Died : 1937Documented citizenships : Norway

The Norwegian painter Hans Dahl, born in Granvin in 1849 and deceased in Balestrand in 1937, developed a body of work associated with the Düsseldorf School of painting. Before dedicating himself to art, he studied to become an officer and served in the Bergenske Brigade until 1874. He then trained with Johan Fredrik Eckersberg and Knud Bergslien, followed by studies in Karlsruhe with Hans Fredrik Gude and Wilhelm Riefstahl, and in Düsseldorf with Eduard von Gebhardt and Wilhelm Sohn. His first exhibition was held in Düsseldorf in 1876.

After living in Düsseldorf, he settled in Berlin in 1888 and resided mainly in Berlin-Wilmersdorf until 1919, while returning to Balestrand, Norway, almost every summer. In 1893, he had Villa Strandheim, his summer residence, built there on the banks of the Sognefjord. William II was among his patrons: in 1910, he granted Dahl a teaching chair and visited the villa on several occasions. Dahl was made a Knight First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav in 1902.

The source that links his art to the Düsseldorf School describes it as characterised by finely detailed, fanciful landscapes. Dahl often depicted the sunlit landscapes of western Norway, with smiling inhabitants in national costumes. Landscapes and portraits are among his subjects; the Schuler Auktionen catalogue also notes his interest in moving water and the almost constant presence of figures in his compositions. The source indicates that he broadened his range of subjects over the course of his life, while resisting the transition from Romanticism to modern art.

This profile brings together identity references for Hans Dahl and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
