The German landscape painter and engraver Leonhard Rausch, associated with Romanticism, was born in Jülich in 1813 and died in Düsseldorf in 1895. His preferred subjects range from the landscapes of his native region to classical landscapes populated with biblical motifs, as well as Alpine panoramas.
Originally from Jülich, he was a friend and pupil of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, who was also born in the town. He belonged to the Künstlerverein Malkasten from its foundation in 1848 until 1870. His numerous travels, particularly in the Alpine regions of Switzerland and Tyrol, provided the subjects for a large part of his oil paintings. Several recorded works attest to this interest in Swiss landscapes: Eiger und Mönch in der Schweiz (1852), Interlaken (1861), Tellskapelle am Vierwaldstätter See (1863) and Der Sustengletscher (1892), all listed as oil paintings on canvas. Another work, Schüttesche Papierfabrik an der Anger, is attributed to Rausch and dated 1860.
