The Polish painter Antoni Karol Suchanek, born in Rzeszów in 1901 and died in Gdynia in 1982, pursued his artistic practice for more than sixty years, according to W. Zmorzyński. In the latter’s account, the occupation and his distance from the sea, which Suchanek regarded as his main source of inspiration, led him towards flowers. After his release from the camp, while hiding in the apartment of the painter Kazimierz Borzym, he often drew this motif. He remained faithful to it until the end of his life, working in oil, gouache, pastel or watercolour, sometimes combining the techniques.
His work also includes occasional forays into abstraction: colourful compositions in which open areas are punctuated by the geometric rhythm of lines. A sales description thus describes Sunflowers (1974), an oil on fibreboard measuring 100 × 50 cm, signed and dated at the lower right.
This profile brings together identity references for Antoni Suchanek and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
