Philipp Otto Schäfer, born in Darmstadt in 1868, was a German painter of portraits, historical subjects and monumental decorations. The son of art historian Georg Schäfer, he grew up surrounded by a family collection and the art of antiquity and the Renaissance. He worked extensively in Munich, where he was associated with the Luitpold group and exhibited at the Glaspalast.
His imagery favoured mythological figures, Bacchic scenes and allegories. Rhythms of bodies and lines organise decoratively conceived compositions, sometimes extending into the ornament of the frame. His Four Elements cycle was shown in Munich in 1903. In Darmstadt, he painted the frieze in the Grand Duchess’s room of the Wedding Tower, depicting a princely wedding celebration.
This profile brings together identity references for Philipp Otto Schäfer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
