Sérvulo Esmeraldo, born in Crato in 1929 and deceased in Fortaleza in 2017, combined printmaking, drawing and sculpture in an exploration of line and geometry. After beginnings in woodcut and a period in São Paulo, he moved to Paris in 1957 on a French scholarship. There he pursued metal printmaking and began experimenting with kinetic art.
His Excitáveis, developed from the middle of the 1960s, use static electricity to set elements in motion. The viewer’s actions thus participate in the object’s operation without the need for complex machinery. Esmeraldo also explored volumes in acrylic and metal. Returning to Brazil in the late 1970s, he created public sculptures in Fortaleza, where natural light and urban space became components of his artistic practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Sérvulo Esmeraldo and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
