Active in sixteenth-century Nuremberg, Hans Plattner first appears in documents in 1521 and became the city painter in 1531. Portraits of the patrician community form a documented aspect of his work. Panels depicting Sebastian and Ursula Ayrer, dated 1527, illustrate the role of paired portraiture: each sitter retains an individual identity while belonging to a marital ensemble. Inscriptions recording age and date support this commemorative function. Attribution of these works to Plattner has been debated, particularly in relation to Hans Brosamer. An earlier print carrying Plattner’s monogram helped inform their reassessment. His surviving work consequently emerges through comparison between paintings and graphic records, which also illuminate the changing history of their attribution.
This profile brings together identity references for Hans Plattner and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
