Paolo Veronese

Born : 1528Died : 1588

Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese (Verona, 1528–Venice, 1588), was a leading painter of the Venetian Renaissance. Trained in his native city under Antonio Badile, he settled in Venice in the early 1550s, working for public institutions, religious communities and aristocratic patrons. His production encompasses altarpieces, portraits, mythological subjects and extensive decorative schemes. Luminous colour, monumental architecture and carefully coordinated groups of figures lend his compositions their theatrical breadth. The frescoes at Villa Barbaro in Maser and his paintings for San Sebastiano demonstrate his command of large architectural settings. The Wedding Feast at Cana, painted in 1562–1563 for the refectory of San Giorgio Maggiore, is now in the Louvre. The Family of Darius before Alexander in London exemplifies his approach to historical narrative. His family workshop continued after his death. His handling of colour and pictorial staging influenced later painters, including Rubens, Tiepolo and Delacroix.
