Born in Castello Valsolda, Paolo Pagani pursued a career linking Venice and central Europe before his death in Milan in 1716. His Venetian training brought him into contact with the printmaker Giuseppe Diamantini and the painting of Pietro Liberi. In 1690 he left Venice with his pupil Antonio Pellegrini on a journey that took him to Austria, Moravia and Poland, among other destinations. Religious painting and monumental decoration formed important parts of his activity.
His drawings reveal a sustained interest in anatomy. A sheet in the Metropolitan Museum, dated 1700–1710, combines several studies of nude figures in pen, wash and black chalk. The National Gallery of Canada also holds a Figure of an Apostle and an Assumption of the Virgin, both dated around 1695.
This profile brings together identity references for Paolo Pagani and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
