The German painter Willi Sitte, born in 1921 in Kratzau (now Chrastava), grew up in a Czech family whose father was of German origin. In 1944, while serving in the Wehrmacht in Italy, he collaborated with the partisans; in 1947, he settled in Halle and became a member of the SED. At the Burg Giebichenstein School of Fine Arts, he consulted the Bauhaus library and discovered painters of modern art there. He looked particularly to Picasso and sought to develop a modern, individual realism in the service of the communist utopia. Picasso’s Minotauromachy is an explicit reference in the drawing Massacre of the Innocents I, which reprises its composition and certain details; Alfred Rethel’s cycle Another Dance of Death is also cited among his models.
A Männlicher Rückenakt from 1982, catalogued under his name, is an oil painting on fibreboard measuring 68 × 56 cm, signed and dated “W.Sitte 82”. The published provenance lists the Galleria d’Arte Piccinini in Cortina d’Ampezzo, followed by a private collection in Italy. His place in the artistic and political life of the GDR is reflected in several roles: he chaired the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR from 1974 to 1988, became a member of the People’s Chamber in 1976, and then a member of the SED Central Committee in 1986.
This profile brings together identity references for Willi Sitte and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
