Franz Krüger (1797–1857), born in Großbadegast and deceased in Berlin, was a German painter, draughtsman and lithographer particularly known for portraits and horses. Trained by Carl Wilhelm Kolbe the Elder, he developed close observation of figures and uniforms. His career took him into court circles, including Saint Petersburg, where he worked for Tsar Nicholas I.
Preparatory drawing played an important role in his method. In 1818 he made several studies for an equestrian portrait of General Gneisenau surrounded by officers, completed the following year. One sheet includes notes on the colours of the uniform. These drawings illuminate the connection between individual portraiture and group composition. The signed oil on wood Officier d’artillerie belongs to this military strand of his work.
This profile brings together identity references for Franz Krüger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
