Eugen Schönebeck, a German painter, was born in 1936 in Heidenau, in the Dresden district. He was the son of Paul Schönebeck, a decorative painter, and Gerda. The documentation emphasizes the limited extent of his artistic activity: his output is estimated at around 80 oil paintings and more than 800 drawings, produced during a few years of artistic activity.
In 1961, he exhibited his works with Georg Baselitz and published the “1. Pandämonische Manifest” with him in connection with their joint exhibition. This collaboration is an important point of reference in his documented career, which also includes several later exhibitions in Berlin, notably at the Hilton-Colonnade Hotel Gallery in 1962 and the Benjamin Katz Gallery in 1965. He participated in documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977; a presentation at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden is also recorded in 1973. In 1992, he received the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting.
A work on paper from 1963, titled Ohne Titel, offers a concrete insight into his graphic work: the entry describes it as ink on paper. The entry gives the mat opening as 28.7 × 19.8 cm; the work bears the monogram and date “ES. 63”. It is listed in the catalogue of the exhibition Eugen Schönebeck, Zeichnungen 1960–1963, presented at Galerie Silvia Menzel in Berlin in 1986. Its published provenance mentions the Olbricht Collection in Essen. The entry for this work specifies that it was to be included in the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works on paper then in preparation.
This profile brings together identity references for Eugen Schönebeck and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
