Sérgio Ferro, born in Curitiba in 1938, is a Brazilian painter, architect and theorist. Educated at the University of São Paulo, he developed a sustained enquiry into the material conditions of artistic work and building production. After going into exile in France, he taught at the architecture school in Grenoble, where he founded the Dessin / Chantier research laboratory. This intellectual activity accompanies an ongoing painting practice.
The body and human suffering occupy an important place in his paintings. In Les Pas de la Passion, held by the Centre d’Art Sacré in Lille, Christian imagery meets a concern with social violence. The MAC USP also holds his work and presented the exhibition Trabalho livre in 2025. Across these settings, the production of images remains closely connected to reflection on labour.
This profile brings together identity references for Sérgio Ferro and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
