Working between New Zealand and Brittany, Sydney Lough Thompson (1877–1973) developed a painting practice attentive to light and harbour life. He began training in Christchurch in 1895 and also took lessons with Petrus van der Velden. In Paris, the Académie Julian and classes with Gabriel Ferrier and William Bouguereau extended his education. He subsequently taught in Christchurch from 1906 to 1910. His early still lifes and portraits gradually gave greater room to a vivid palette and painting outdoors. Concarneau, to which he returned regularly, became a central subject. Portrait au tournesol de madame Thompson (1913), recorded at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brest, nevertheless recalls the continuing place of portraiture within this development.
This profile brings together identity references for Sydney Lough Thompson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
