Maurice-Élie Sarthou studied at the fine arts schools in Montpellier and Paris before working as a drawing teacher. Settling in Paris in 1950, he soon divided his time with Sète and left teaching in 1958 to concentrate on painting. His work moves between figuration and abstraction: nature remains identifiable, but colour and gesture transform its experience. Pines bent by the mistral, Camargue bulls, rocks, lagoons and forest fires become subjects for a sensory investigation. Oil painting and works on paper provide its main fields of exploration. Illustrated books, including projects around Valéry and Rimbaud, together with stained glass, extend his engagement with light and movement into other artistic media and settings.
