Trained at the Montreal School of Fine Arts, Paul-Vanier Beaulieu initially worked in advertising before moving to Paris in 1938. Exchanges between France and Quebec subsequently shaped his career. In Montreal, he took up printmaking and helped introduce processes such as sugar-lift etching and colour printing from overlapping plates. In Paris, he explored wet watercolour techniques. His repertoire shifted from still lifes towards the human figure and roosters, while European journeys later encouraged a return to abstraction. His illustrations for Jean-Louis Vallas’s poetry collection Ô Visages brought together his graphic experiments and interest in the book. He returned permanently to Quebec in the early 1970s, continuing a practice that moved between painting, works on paper and prints.
This profile brings together identity references for Paul-Vanier Beaulieu and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
