Born in Mexico, Pennsylvania, in 1941, Suzan Frecon graduated in fine arts from Pennsylvania State University in 1963 before studying for three years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. European museums and architecture informed her thinking about colour and light. Her abstract painting developed alongside a practice on paper.
Frecon constructs compositions of asymmetrical forms balanced through precise relationships of scale and proportion. She prepares her colours with particular attention to pigments and oil; differences between matte and glossy surfaces alter perception as the light changes. Her works invite sustained looking rather than narrative interpretation. In 2008 the exhibition form, color, illumination, organised by the Menil Collection in Houston, subsequently travelled to the Kunstmuseum Bern, presenting this exploration of painting.
This profile brings together identity references for Suzan Frecon and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
