Drawing occupies a central place in the work of Sunil Das (1939–2015), an Indian artist born in Calcutta. Horses observed in the mounted police stables inspired hundreds of drawings between the 1950s and 1960s. A rapid, restless line seeks to capture their presence rather than record a meticulously descriptive likeness. Das entered the Government College of Arts and Crafts in 1955 and continued his education in Paris through a scholarship. He attended S. William Hayter and Krishna Reddy's Atelier 17, where he developed his drawing and printmaking. A founding member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, he also participated in the Paris Biennale. He received the Shiromani Kala Puraskar in 1991.
This profile brings together identity references for Sunil Das and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
