Nikifor Krynicki, also called Epifaniusz Drowniak, was a Lemko painter associated with naive art. Little recognised for much of his life, he gained wider attention only later. He worked on modest, often reused supports, applying pencil, coloured pencil and watercolour to paper, cardboard, packaging and notebook pages. On these surfaces he reconstructed a world shaped by observation, fantasy and personal experience. Towns, religious buildings, stations, viaducts and trains appear alongside portraits and sacred scenes. Strong outlines organise the forms before they are filled with colour, while inscriptions in capital letters, sometimes difficult to decipher, accompany the images. Architecture thus occupies an important place in a pictorial world that transforms familiar surroundings. His simple materials supported a remarkably varied range of subjects.
This profile brings together identity references for Nikifor Krynicki and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
