Francesco Solimena

Francesco Solimena (1657–1747) held an important position in Neapolitan history and religious painting. Trained by his father Angelo and subsequently by Francesco di Maria in Naples, he progressed from family collaborations to large church decorations. The sacristy of San Paolo Maggiore and Heliodorus Expelled from the Temple at Gesù Nuovo mark this monumental career. Architecture structures the figures in his compositions, while contrasts of light animate their draperies. Preparatory drawings in pen, chalk or wash support this approach to construction. His workshop became an important training centre, with pupils including Sebastiano Conca and Corrado Giaquinto. Commissions for Charles of Bourbon continued his work for princely patrons during the final phase of his career.

This profile brings together identity references for Francesco Solimena and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
