Born in Budapest in 1968, Rita Ackermann trained in Hungary before moving to New York in the early 1990s. Her early paintings and drawings multiply adolescent female figures, combining classical references with popular culture. In 1994 she created an imitation stained-glass window inhabited by girls and animals for the New Museum’s window. The project draws on Gauguin while introducing computers and headphones into an allegorical landscape.
The Chalkboard Paintings move this figuration towards erasure: chalk drawings are made and rubbed away on canvas prepared like a classroom blackboard. In the Mama series, motifs and silhouettes emerge before dissolving. Hidden, the exhibition presented at MASI Lugano in 2023, brought these painterly investigations into relation with her works from the 1990s.
This profile brings together identity references for Rita Ackermann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
