The French painter, printmaker and sculptor Charles Walch was born in Thann on 4 August 1896 and died in Paris on 12 December 1948. After training in Mulhouse, he worked as a pattern designer for textile printing, his first professional activity related to drawing. In 1916, he met the senior military doctor Paul Bonnet, an art enthusiast who encouraged him to persevere; with Bonnet’s help and that of Prefect Poulet, he later obtained a grant that enabled him to settle in Paris. On leaving the École des arts décoratifs, he decorated the chapel of the Moyen-Collège at Sainte-Croix de Neuilly on a voluntary basis, and was appointed its drawing teacher. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants d’Alsace in 1923, then moved in 1929 to a studio at 14, rue Borromée, Paris, where he lived and worked until the end of his life.
Colour came to the fore in his paintings from 1935; bouquets became a recurring motif, appearing in most of the works made between 1935 and 1942. His exhibition history includes participation in an exhibition of young painters at the Galerie Braun in Paris in 1934. In 1937, he received a gold medal at the Paris International Exposition. In 1940, he left for the Creuse for three months during the exodus. The following year, he took part in the exhibition «Vingt jeunes peintres de tradition française», organised by Bazaine. A rooster by Walch appeared on the poster for the 1944 Salon d’Automne. In 1948, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mulhouse devoted a fifth and final exhibition to him; he was also appointed a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur.
