Joachim Bueckelaer is distinguished by his market and kitchen scenes, in which food stalls and domestic utensils occupy a central place. Most of the works associated with him are dated from 1561 to 1571.
The series The Four Elements, acquired by the National Gallery in London in 2001, illustrates this approach. In Water, a fish market brings together twelve kinds of fish, in reference to the twelve apostles.
In 1563, Bueckelaer experimented with more open landscape settings. Research into the technique of his paintings has also shown that he often reused his own compositions from one painting to another. He worked for Antonio Moro, who entrusted him with adjustments to portraits; he may also have added figures to the landscapes of Cornelis van Dalem. The Mauritshuis holds a Kitchen Scene with Christ at Emmaus attributed to him. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp also lists, under number 861, a still life dated 1564.
This profile brings together identity references for Joachim Beuckelaer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
