Arthur Luiz Piza’s work unfolds in a continuous dialogue between painting and printmaking, two practices that mutually nourish one another in the studio. His artistic research spans a range of materials, from paper to porcelain, from copper to brush mats. The scale of his work ranges from small formats to structures intended for public spaces.
Born in São Paulo on 13 January 1928, he received his initial training from the painter Antonio Gomide, who taught him oil painting and fresco. After his marriage to Clelia Dente in 1949, the couple moved to Paris in 1951 and settled there permanently. In the capital, Piza came into contact with, among others, Nicolas de Staël and Zao Wou-Ki.
Several distinctions mark his career as a printmaker: the Grand prix national de gravure at the São Paulo Biennial in 1959, the David Bright Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1966, followed by printmaking prizes at the Florence and Kraków Biennials in 1970, and at the Puerto Rico Biennial in 1990. In 1977, he was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters; in 1980, he took part in founding the Espace latino-américain, whose presidency he held for many years.
