Born around 1616 in Beverwijk, Thomas Wyck came from a family of painters and draughtsmen and learned to paint from his father. His work encompasses a range of subjects: coastal and maritime landscapes, boats at harbour entrances, market or fair scenes, as well as alchemists and pharmacy interiors. In Naples, he made numerous preparatory sketches for drawings of coastal landscapes. His journey to Italy, around 1640, took him to Naples, among other places; the account also reports that, that year in Rome, a painter referred to as “Tommaso fiammingo” resided in Via de la Fontanella.
On his return to the Netherlands in 1642, he settled in Haarlem and joined the Guild of St Luke, of which he was appointed dean in 1660. He then stayed in England during the Restoration, between 1660 and 1666 according to the dates given, accompanied by his son Jan Wyck, also a painter; Jan remained in England until the end of his life. In London, Thomas Wyck painted a view of the city dating from before the fire of 1666, several views of its districts and, on several occasions, depictions of the fire.
The works mentioned include an “Italian Courtyard with a Well”, held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and a “Halte de Bohémiens” on wood, measuring 24 × 30 cm, mentioned in the Courtois collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Chartres.
