Jean Pougny, also known as Ivan Puni, was a French-Russian painter who died in Paris in 1956. During his first stay in Paris, beginning in 1910, he attended the Académie Julian and encountered Cézanne’s painting, Fauvism and Cubism. In Russia, he participated in the activities of the avant-garde Union of Youth. In Petrograd in 1915, he organised Tramway V and 0.10, exhibitions bringing together artists involved in Cubo-Futurist and Suprematist experimentation. He embraced Suprematism during this period. His subsequent career took him to Berlin and then to Paris in the early 1920s. His painting moved towards figuration and, in the 1940s and 1950s, towards intimate scenes of everyday life. Works held by the Centre Pompidou include Le Coiffeur, dated 1915, Atelier, painted around 1944, and Jardin, from 1954. They represent different stages in a career linking the Russian avant-garde with artistic life in France.
This profile brings together identity references for Ivan Puni and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
