Jean-Baptiste Pillement, also known as Jean Pillement (1728–1808), was born and died in Lyon, but built a career across Europe. His travels took him to Portugal, England and Poland, among other countries. Between 1765 and 1767 he worked in Poland, producing decorative panels that include two Chinoiseries now held at the Petit Palais. His work combines landscape painting with ornamental invention: oils, gouaches and pastels sit alongside designs intended to circulate through prints. His published collections of Chinese motifs supplied painters and designers with an imaginative vocabulary associated with Rococo taste. These images belong to a European decorative fantasy rather than a direct account of China. Anne Allen helped disseminate his designs through etching. Moving between rural scenes and arabesques, Pillement made drawing a meeting point for painting, printmaking and decoration, linking the individual image to a wider repertoire of usable motifs.
