Ángel Duarte (Aldeanueva del Camino, 1930–Sion, 2007) developed a practice linking optical art, kinetic art and geometric construction. He settled in Paris in 1954 and became a founding member of Equipo 57 in 1957. The group’s first exhibition took place at Galerie Denise René, marking a significant collective chapter in his career. Duarte moved to Sion in 1961 and became actively involved in artistic life in Valais. He helped establish the Association valaisanne des artistes in 1963 and founded Group Y with Walter Fischer and Robert Tanner in 1967. The following year, the fine arts museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds exhibited his work alongside Max Bill’s. Duarte assembled structures from repeated modules, including welded steel grids. Their arrangement generates volumes that alter the perception of light and surrounding space. Often monumental, his works extend into public settings. He received the City of Sion Prize in 1992.
