Ewald Mataré

Documented citizenships : Germany

Animals occupy a major place in Ewald Mataré’s sculpture and also appear in his works on paper. Around 1946, Drei Kühe am Meer combined watercolour and opaque white, organising the cows and their landscape through geometric forms. Mataré trained at the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1907, including with Lovis Corinth, and joined the Novembergruppe in 1918. Appointed professor in Düsseldorf in 1932, he subsequently lost his position and turned towards sacred art. His sculpture Die Katze was displayed in the Nazi exhibition entitled “Degenerate Art” in 1937. After the war, he again took on responsibilities at the Düsseldorf academy. He participated in the first two editions of documenta, held in 1955 and 1959.

This profile brings together identity references for Ewald Mataré and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
