The French painter and decorator Marcel Gromaire (1892–1971) developed a practice spanning painting, decoration, tapestry and printmaking. After studying law, he abandoned the legal profession and, from 1910, attended studios in Montparnasse. Conscripted during the First World War, he spent six years in the army. On his return to Paris, he set up his studio in the rue Delambre and wrote film criticism for Le Crapouillot.
His meeting with Maurice Girardin began a ten-year period during which Girardin acquired, by contract, the entirety of his output. In 1925, Gromaire exhibited La Guerre at the Salon des indépendants; the painting, dated to the same year, is now held at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris. La Loterie foraine, painted in 1923, is held in the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne. A retrospective of his work was held at Kunsthalle Basel in 1933. In 1937, he received commissions from the state for the Exposition internationale de Paris.
After 1937, he became interested in tapestry and advocated an expression specific to the medium. From 1939 to 1944, he lived in Aubusson and took part in the revival of tapestry alongside Jean Lurçat. His works include the panel L’Abolition de l’esclavage, created in 1950 for the Assemblée de l’Union française and held at La Piscine, musée d’art et d’industrie de Roubaix.
His printmaking began with woodcuts: between 1918 and 1925, he made around thirty, before turning chiefly to etching; most of his etchings were printed by Paul Haasen and his son Raymond. He also illustrated Shakespeare’s Macbeth with twenty original etchings, in an edition of 180 copies. The Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris also holds 78 oil paintings from Dr Girardin’s collection, as well as a substantial group of drawings and watercolours. In 1950, Gromaire travelled to the United States as a member of the jury for the Carnegie Prize; the prize was awarded to him in 1952.
This profile brings together identity references for Marcel Gromaire and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
