Robert Gardelle (1682–1766) made portraiture a central focus of his career in Geneva. Known as “the Younger” to distinguish him from his brother Daniel, a miniaturist based in England, he broadened his training through stays in Kassel, Berlin and Paris. In Paris he studied with Nicolas de Largillierre and copied his portraits. Returning to Geneva in 1713, he worked for patrons including political officeholders and professors of theology, while also travelling within Switzerland. His work as an engraver complemented this attention to individuals with representations of the city: in 1726 he produced several views of Geneva. His portrait of Rousseau, made in 1754, belongs to his sustained practice of portraiture.
