Jan Schoonhoven (1914–1994), a Dutch artist born and died in Delft, moved from early abstract explorations to a body of work in which relief and repetition occupy a central place. In the late 1940s and through to 1951, he made abstract works in ink and watercolour; his early production also includes drawings. In the early 1950s, his work became more elaborate and monochromatic. Among other materials, he introduced string and cardboard into his drawings and paintings, giving them relief.
He subsequently developed abstract monochrome reliefs, most often white, made of corrugated cardboard mounted on plywood. Geometric grids organise the rhythmic repetition of motifs within them. Schoonhoven attributed a poetic quality to these works, linked to the continuous interplay of light and shadow around the grids.
He played a central role in the Dutch Nul movement, founded in 1960 in reaction, among other things, to Abstract Expressionist painting and the CoBrA movement. In 1967, he took part in the São Paulo Biennial, where he received second prize. In the late 1970s, he returned to drawing, most often with a pen or India ink. Line and dot are repeated there with a more fluid gesture.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Schoonhoven and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
