Nicholas Matthews Condy

Born : 1816Died : 1851

The British painter Nicholas Matthews Condy, born in Plymouth in 1816, died in that city on 20 May 1851. He is associated with marine painting and numerous views of the Thames. His father initially intended him for the army or the navy, but this path was abandoned when his talent as a marine painter became apparent. Born in Union Street, he studied at Mount Radford School in Exeter, then under the Reverend C. Thomas in Lew Trenchard. The biographical account also describes him as a classical scholar and a linguist.

According to this account, the Earl of Egremont, an art enthusiast and a close associate of his father, noticed a sketch of the yacht Kestrel made by the young Condy and gave him ten guineas. Condy then frequently accompanied the Earl aboard his yacht; the source also credits his father’s instruction and his patron’s encouragement with a role in his career as a painter. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy from 1842 to 1845. George Pycroft devoted an entry to him in Art in Devonshire: with the biographies of artists born in that county, published in 1883.
