Portraiture held a central place in the career of Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein (1788–1868). Trained first by his father, Christian Leberecht Vogel, and then at the Dresden Academy, he worked in Saint Petersburg before living in Rome from 1813 to 1820. There he portrayed figures including Bertel Thorvaldsen and Pope Pius VII. Appointed professor in Dresden in 1820, he continued to undertake portrait commissions and religious paintings alongside his teaching. His interest in the old masters is reflected in the copies he made and collected during his Italian journeys. He also assembled more than seven hundred drawn portraits, now held by Dresden’s Kupferstich-Kabinett. Compositions devoted to Dante, Goethe’s Faust and Virgil’s Aeneid extended his work into literary subjects.
