Léon Detroy developed much of his career around Gargilesse and the landscapes of the Creuse valley. Following training in Paris, he settled in the village, renting a house that he bought in 1912 and occupied until his death. His attachment to this setting did not prevent travel, notably to Normandy and North Africa. Associated with Post-Impressionism, his painting found an enduring subject in landscape, sustained by the alternation between a familiar home and other places. A friend of the poet Maurice Rollinat, he also met Claude Monet at Fresselines. Participation in the Salon des Indépendants in 1905 connected this activity to exhibition networks beyond the region with which his work remains particularly closely associated.
