Fritz Mackensen (1866–1953) is closely associated with Worpswede, where he helped establish the artists’ colony with Otto Modersohn and Hans am Ende in 1889. His training included study in Munich under Friedrich August von Kaulbach and Wilhelm von Diez. He combined this academic background with an interest in human figures and everyday activities. Works recorded by the Art Institute of Chicago reflect his attention to people both at work and at rest. Teaching and institutional leadership also shaped his career: he directed the art school in Weimar from 1908 to 1916 and the Nordische Kunsthochschule in Bremen between 1933 and 1935. His career thus brings together artistic practice, an artists’ community and education.
This profile brings together identity references for Fritz Mackensen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
