Michelle Stuart, born in Los Angeles in 1933, developed a practice encompassing drawing, photography, sculpture and interventions in the landscape. Her work attends to traces left by natural processes and human activity. From the 1970s, she used large paper scrolls and frottage, treating the support as a surface that records the features of a place rather than simply representing it.
In Scanning Sequence, held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, graphite and earth collected on site transfer the particularities of terrain onto paper. Sayreville Strata Quartet, held by Dia Art Foundation, extends this attention to materials from specific locations. Stuart brings together observation, memory and movement: fragments and impressions make tangible the relationships between situated experience, the passage of time and the transformation of landscapes.
This profile brings together identity references for Michelle Stuart and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
