Hermann Nitsch

Born : 1938Died : 2022Documented citizenships : Austria

The Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch, born in Vienna in 1938 and deceased in 2022, made the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries a central concern of his work from 1957 onwards. He conceived this project as a total work of art addressing the spectator-participant’s five senses. He is presented as a major figure of Viennese Actionism, alongside Günter Brus and Otto Muehl, among others.

He also developed the Schüttbilder, surfaces onto which liquid is poured. In December 1962, Action No. 1 took place before an invited audience in Otto Muehl’s apartment. In March 1963, he carried out Action No. 2 at Josef Dvořák’s gallery in Vienna.

A work listed under the title 18b.malaktion is dated June–July 1986 and associated with Casa Morra in Naples.

This profile brings together identity references for Hermann Nitsch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
