Known by several forms of his name, including Johan Meerhoud and Jan Meerhoud, Jan Meerhout is presented as a Dutch painter; one source also describes him as a draughtsman. His activity is dated to around 1650–1677. The places where he worked include Gorinchem, where he is recorded from 1650 to 1667, as well as Utrecht, Heusden and Dordrecht. Amsterdam is also mentioned as a place of work in 1677.
River Scene: City and Cathedral, an oil on oak panel measuring 37.5 × 49 cm, is associated with his name and held at the Victoria and Albert Museum under number DYCE.45. The work’s entry gives approximate dates for the artist. Another landscape, titled Paysage ruiniste animé au bord d’un canal, is presented by Piguet under the name Meerhout as a signed oil on panel measuring 32.5 × 40.5 cm; the description notes that it was heavily retouched. The published provenance mentions Sotheby’s in New York in 1995, Christie’s in Amsterdam in 1997, and then a Swiss private collection.
