Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim, generally known as Eduard Meyerheim, was a Prussian painter born in Danzig in 1808 and died in Berlin in 1879. He received his first lessons from his father, Karl Friedrich Meyerheim, a decorative painter, and then studied with Johann Adam Breysig in his home town. In 1830, he continued his training at the Berlin Academy, where he worked with Johann Gottfried Schadow, Eduard Daege and Johann Gottfried Niedlich.
After his studies, a trip through the March of Brandenburg with Heinrich Strack, a future architect, led him to make numerous architectural drawings, particularly of churches and brick buildings. Between 1833 and 1841, he painted Romantic genre scenes in the tradition of the Düsseldorf School of Painting. He then devoted himself to depicting bourgeois and peasant life; his study regions included Westphalia, Thuringia, Hesse and the Harz.
The painting Der Geburtstagskorb is reported to have been shown at Karfunkel’s Berlin art exhibition in 1866, and then at the 9th exhibition of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin in 1880. An oil study is accompanied by a confirmation from Paul Meyerheim, who identifies it as a work by his father. In 1836, Meyerheim married Karoline Drake, sister of the sculptor Friedrich Drake; he was the father of the painters Franz and Paul Friedrich Meyerheim. From 1870, a severe nervous disorder impeded his artistic activity. His work is also included in the second volume of Friedrich von Boetticher’s Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, on page 45, under number 101.
