James Clarke Hook (1819–1907) was an English painter and etcher. Admitted to the Royal Academy in 1836, he studied there for three years before exhibiting The Hard Task in 1839. A stay in Italy allowed him to study Titian and Venetian painting. Initially devoted to historical subjects, he turned to rural scenes and then coastal life after several visits to Clovelly in Devon. He travelled along British coasts and to Brittany and the Netherlands, painting from life before completing his pictures at home. Elected a full Royal Academician in 1860, he continued exhibiting until 1902. His works are held by institutions including Tate and the Guildhall Art Gallery.
